The Distributed Multimedia Applications Group (DMAG) is part of the Technology Dept. ('Departament de Tecnologia') at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), where it exists from 1999. However, the group was created in late 80s at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), inside the Computer Architecture Dept. ('Departament d' Arquitectura de Computadors'). Currently, there are about 20 people in the group, having a PhD nearly half of them. Furthermore, all of them are lecturing either in the Computer Science or in the Telecommunication Engineering studies of the UPF.

The current research and development activities mainly deal with the electronic commerce of multimedia services and products, use of metadata to organise and search for information, and all aspects of security, digital rights management, and mobility.

In particular, the key areas of research include:

  • Digital Rights Management: Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), business models, information representation, control, protection, negotiation, contracting, expression languages, standardisation, …
  • Electronic commerce of services and multimedia products: architecture, brokerage, workflow, dynamic services, collaborative environments, …
  • Meta-applications: metadata interoperability, distributed information search, audiovisual metadata, ...
  • Security in communications: in mobile applications, digital signatures, security protocols, …
  • Semantic Web and Agents technology: ontologies, intelligent agents, mobile agents, knowledge management, content profiling, ...
